QR Codes & Effectiveness

March 26, 2011

QR Codes are somewhat of a mystery of technology right now. Will they be the next big viral media technology or simply a blip on the radar? ReadWrite has some interesting findings in their article, How Effective are QR Codes Anyway?

After having saturated the Asian market, QR Codes are just now becoming popular in the states. MGH – a Baltimore ad firm – has found that:

“About 72% of smart phone users say they would be likely to recall an advertisement that contained a QR code.”

72% is quite the hefty number, but is anyone using the QR Codes they see?

“According to the survey, only 32% of smart phone users say they’ve used a QR code.”

Most QR code use tends to be to aimed at entering conferences or accessing product information and content. ReadWrite notes that QR Codes still require special software or apps to be read, even including the iPhone. Until the reading of QR Codes are built-in natively to devices expect their use, and thus their returns to be sub-par.
